A Magical Day of Friends & Classics

This year's Belvedere Classic, the 18th annual, drew the biggest turnout since 2008, with a record number of classic boats, classic cars and enthusiasts on hand.

Congratulations to Brian Boyd on Neja for first in Classic Yacht 1, Jim Borger, Bruce Riter, Colin Trevor, Nadee Gunasana, & Salley Lee Stewarti on Hana for second, Richard & Mark Pearce on Fjaer for third; Mike O’Callaghan on Viking for first in Classic Yacht 2, Richard Leland on Fairwyn for second, and Dennis Brewer & Joe Sallady on Kookaburra for third; Andy Flick on Aida for first in the Schooner Class, Terry & Lindsey Klaus on Brigadoon for second, and Jim Cullen on Gold Star for third; Andy Schwenk on Sir Edmund for first in Spirit of Tradition, Barry & Sylvia Stompe on Iolani for second, and Summer’s Moon with Bryan Kemnitzer, Nancy Barron, Chris Kelly & Jim Colletto for third.

A big thank-you to S/C Jim Robinson, Martha Robinson, Harbormaster Kevin Tentis, Bob McDermott and S/C Andy Fromm for hustling on the docks all weekend to keep the fleet tied up safely — no small job with that many beautiful boats coming and going. Special mention to the schooner Brigadoon, owned by Terry Klaus and captained by daughter Lindsey Klaus, sailing in every Classic Regatta since the very first one in 2008.

The boats were split into four divisions and all sailed a pursuit style race on two slightly different courses under sunny skies in 14-18 knots of wind. Most of the boats started within 20 seconds of their start times, under a light ebb current.

Given that all boats were sailing pursuit, many of them finished close together with half the fleet finishing in the middle 10 minutes of the finish spread.

As a community of people dedicated to the preservation of these classic yachts and the tradition of sailing on the San Francisco Bay, we are lucky to have the support of key friends and partners.
