Brigadoon
History
L. Francis Herrshoff designed Joan (Brigadoon) in 1924 and she was built at the Britt Bros. Yard in Lynn, Massachusetts for Waldo Brown.
Joan (Brigadoon) had several owners before WWII.
After the war, Sterling Hayden actor, writer and tall ship sailor purchased the boat and renamed the schooner, Brigadoon. He brought her West to Los Angeles, where he and his starlet wife lived and sailed aboard with the their young family during his acting years.
He sold the boat to Jim Mills of Huntington Beach in the early 1950’s, who raced Brigadoon in the 1959 TransPac and then on to Tahiti.
Brigadoon moved to San Francisco right after that under the brief ownership of Jim Denibein, STFYC member.
Jim sold Brigadoon to a land developer, Gary Reece , a CYC member and owned her for fourteen years. He kept her in the CYC harbor and Glen Cove.
Gary Reese sold the boat to Deno Valentina of the rock band “Quick Messenger Service” who owned her for three years
In 1976, Terry and Patti bought Brigadoon and moved her to Ballena Bay, behind their house. After much work, Brigadoon raced in the 1977 Master Mariners Regatta. The Klaus family still owns Brigadoon, racing and winning in the Master Mariners Regatta, SFYC’s Schooner Cup, STFYC’s Jessica Cup, CYC boat show and the first RBBS Classic division. The Klaus family cruises and races with family and friends to Tinsley Island and she has also served as the flagship of STFYC and the Master Mariners. After 40 years as Skipper of Brigadoon, Terry has handed the helm to his daughter Lindsey Klaus to continue the tradition.
