Yucca

History

YUCCA was designed in 1936 by Nicholas Potter to the International 8 meter rule for Commodore Bartholomew of the Newport Beach Yacht Club. She became their flagship yacht. Potter was a student of L. Francis Herreshoff.

She has white oak frames and is double planked with Honduras mahogany over Port Orford cedar.

All fasteners are silicon bronze. Her LOA is about 50’ and her beam is 7’10” which makes her the narrowest 8 meter. She had a few owners after Bartholomew but importantly YUCCA was always well maintained and never fell into disrepair.

In about 1964 a handsome racer named Hank Easom travelled south to buy a fast boat. He was not looking for an 8 meter but spied her for sale through the lifting fog and so began a 53 year love affair. Hank raced her continuously with enormous success on the San Francisco Bay and beyond. YUCCA and Hank have their names together on many trophies, not once or twice but upwards of 13 times. Many sailors at the San Francisco Yacht Club have enjoyed sailing and racing her on the bay.

These days she can often be found sailing and occasionally racing on the bay.

She may not go as fast today, without Hank at the helm, but everyone who sails on her leaves enchanted under her spell.
